FOLEY, Alabama — Many of the models participating in The Refuge on the Runway event, which will be held Tuesday, April 19 at the Foley Civic Center, have some amazing stories to tell.
These are not stories of weekend trips to Milan or spending the summer in Paris, something you might expect from high-fashion models. These are stories of overcoming addiction.
The Refuge for Women provides a Christian home, professional counseling and 12-step peer support for women struggling with substance abuse.
The fashion show and luncheon, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, will feature several graduates from the program.
“We want people to see that these women have become productive members of our society,” said Connie Plemmons, director of operations for The Refuge. Located east of Robertsdale, the home is the only residential treatment program for women in Baldwin County.
The event will feature nine models showcasing fashions from local shops in Baldwin County, including Cybele’s, Déjà vu, Soul Shine Yoga and The Cat’s Meow in Fairhope, R.K.ICK in Robertsdale, Bungalows in Foley, Oohlala in Daphne, Pink Anchor and Southern Grace in Silverhill.
Rose Ann Haven of WKRG News 5 will serve as emcee and the event will feature jazz vocalist Emily McKinney, who will begin performing at 11 a.m. Door prizes will also be given away during the event.
Formerly “Saving Grace Home for Women,” the 27-acre facility, located in the Elsanor Community east of Robertsdale, was built on land donated by the Snook Foundation. After closing in the spring of 2014 the facility reopened later that same year with a new name and a completely revamped program, developed by Executive Director Nancy Robertson and Verlee Young, a licensed clinical social worker.
The Refuge is a non-profit, 10-bed, 90-day residential recovery program for adult women suffering from alcohol and drug dependency. Depending on the individual’s needs, Robertson said, the program can extend from 30 to 180 days.
Tickets for Tuesday’s event cost $50 per person and seating is limited.
