The Bluegill is going green

SPANISH FORT, Ala. — The Bluegill has decided to mark its 50th anniversary by making some changes in order to better conserve energy and reduce our impact on the earth and the environment.

One of the biggest changes the restaurant has made was to enroll in Alabama Power’s Renewable Energy program.

The Bluegill will begin paying 5 percent more to ensure that its facilities are using renewable energy sources from renewable resources such as switchgrass and wood chips, as opposed to fossil fuels.

The restaurant has also begun purchasing its cleaning products from Procter & Gamble’s Professional Line.  The Pro Line's Green Guarantee ensures the environmental safety of its products, packaging and operations.

All Green Guarantee products provide outstanding performance while meeting high standards for human and environmental safety.

While the Bluegill has long been recycling its used paper products, paper products and refuse container liners will now be made from recycled materials. The restaurant is seeking a firm to handle the recycling of its glass bottles.

This would save an estimated 140,000 bottles from winding up in our landfills each year.
