Teens charged in Halliday Park assault

BAY MINETTE – A pair of Bay Minette teens were arrested and charged for assaulting a woman and her son at a baseball game two weeks ago.

The April 29 assault at Halliday Park led to the arrest of Dylan Michael Capps and James Wesley Cook. The teens were detained Tuesday and booked into the Baldwin County Corrections Center. Capps, 18, of 41755 Old Daphne Road; and Cook, 18, of West Charlie Hodges Road; were each charged with two counts of second degree assault and released on a $5,000 bond apiece. Cook had a Rabun community address last fall when he was charged with failure to appear on traffic charges, according to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office website.

The victim told WALA Fox 10 television that she and her son were watching a baseball game when Capps, Cook and two juveniles pulled up and a truck and approached them.

“They had their shirts off yelling and hollering, cussing telling them, ‘Let’s fight,’ like it was a rally or a riot they wanted to fight. They were there for business,” said the victim, who refused to give her name or go on camera.

Bay Minette Police Capt. James Eissler said the teens brought a small wooden bat and a pocketknife to the park and used those weapons to injure the victims. The woman said she suffered a broken left forearm, while her son was stabbed two times in the torso. Not even the woman’s pepper spray stopped the teens from jumping the victims.

“The victims started yelling, and others in the park heard it and came over and said they were going to call the police,” said Eissler. “That’s when the assault stopped, and the suspects got back in their vehicle and left the area.”

According to police, the fight stems from an ongoing dispute between the victims and the suspects.

Police are still investigating the incident. The two juveniles who were in the truck remain free, but police have not ruled out additional charges.
