SPANISH FORT, Alabama - Baldwin County’s high school football teams are back in region play tonight and the county’s highest ranked team, 5A No. 3 Spanish Fort, will host No. 5 St. Paul’s with the Region 2 lead on the line.
The Toros (5-0) are currently the No. 1 seed in the Region 2 standings, ahead of St. Paul’s and Vigor, who have identical 4-1 overall and 3-0 region records. Spanish Fort has wins over 6A powers Daphne and Fairhope and has racked up decisive region victories over B.C. Rain, Faith Academy and Gulf Shores.
Senior Toro quarterback Joel Poe threw four touchdown passes in a win over Fairhope last week.
The Saints have three shutouts this season and their only loss came against Fairhope in the season opener. St. Paul’s gives up just 7.4 points per game which puts the Saints fourth in defense in 5A. The Toros are third in Class 5A in offense, scoring 41 points per game this season.
St. Paul’s beat Spanish Fort 30-0 last season and holds a 5-2 overall against the Toros.
The game will be the UTV-44 featured high school game of the week and will be broadcast on the radio by WNSP 105.5 FM.
Foley at Baldwin County: The Foley Lions look to rebound after a tough 21-13 loss at 5A power Jackson last week with a road trip to face the Baldwin County Tigers at Simmons Field in Bay Minette tonight. The Lions (3-2, 2-1) will play their fourth of five straight road games tonight.
The Tigers (0-5, 0-3) are still looking for their first win. Baldwin County fell 27-14 last week at Gulf Shores. Foley beat BCHS 41-0 last season. The Lions need a region win tonight to keep up with Fairhope, Daphne and Dothan in the 6A Region 2 race. The game will be broadcast on the radio by WHEP 1310 AM in Baldwin County.
Fairhope at Robertsdale: The Fairhope Pirates and Robertsdale Golden Bears both hope to rebound from losses last week tonight at J.D. Sellars Stadium in Robertsdale. The Pirates (4-1, 3-0) lost 31-21 to the Spanish Fort Toros while the Bears (0-5, 0-3) fell to the Baker Hornets last week. Fairhope defeated the Bears 49-19 last week. The Pirates, under the direction of first-year head coach Adam Winegarden, are currently in the lead in 6A Region 2 with a perfect 3-0 record, while the Bears are seeking their first win under new head coach Brian Campbell.
Daphne at Dothan: The Daphne Trojans (3-2, 3-0) hope to keep up with the Fairhope Pirates in the 6A Region 2 standings by beating Dothan tonight on the road. The tenth-ranked Trojans lost to rival McGill-Toolen last week but are currently in second place in Region 2, in front of third-place Dothan (4-1, 2-1).
Vigor at Gulf Shores: The Gulf Shores Dolphins (2-3, 0-3) got a homecoming win over Baldwin County last week and welcome the Vigor Wolves (4-1, 3-0) tonight in 5A Region 2 play at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. Vigor beat rival Blount 21-13 last week and has won four consecutive games. The game will be broadcast by WCSN 105.7 FM in Gulf Shores.
Straughn at Bayside Academy: The Bayside Academy Admirals host Straughn tonight in 3A Region 1 play at Admirals Field in Daphne.
The Admirals (2-3, 2-1) are in fourth place in the Region 1 standings and need a win to keep pace with T.R. Miller, Straughn and W.S. Neal.
Bayside has lost to T.R. Miller, Charles Henderson and UMS-Wright this season. Straughn beat Elba last week.
