GULF SHORES, AL – When a fire started by a malfunctioning heating and air unit at Tacky Jacks in Orange Beach on March 3, fire fighters responded quickly, doused the flames and kept it from spreading.
Fortunately personnel were at the restaurant when the incident started or it may have claimed the entire restaurant.
“We’re lucky this happened at 9 in the morning,” Tacky Jacks Vice President Dave Evans said. “If it had happened at 3 in the morning this thing would have been a bon fire.”
To show his appreciation for the quick response and efficient work of the fire fighters, owner Buddy Skipper wanted to give something back.
During the week of Feb. 29-March 6 all fire and police first responders in uniform can go to Tacky Jacks in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores for a free meal.
On Feb. 22 the Gulf Shores City Council declared it as Tacky Jacks Appreciation Week for First Responders.
“We do appreciate our first responders and we are heavily involved in the community,” Tacky Jacks Marketing Director Susan Sizemore told the council. “(Buddy) Skipper, the owner of Orange Beach Tacky Jacks and partner in the others, has had a life-long love for the fire department and the police department. It’s not just something that started on March 3. It spearheaded his desire to show our appreciation.”
The company wanted to include law and fire responders in both island towns.
“Even though the fire was in Orange Beach we didn’t want to leave Gulf Shores out because we feel so indebted to you for everything that you do,” Sizemore said. “We will be seeing you. Wear your uniform and you can come every day. We’re proud of all you do and are glad we can give a little bit back to you.”
Chief Ed Delmore said given the national attitude toward law enforcement he and his department appreciate the reception given by the business community and citizens.
“With everything going on specifically with the negativity going toward law enforcement in the United States, we experience just the opposite here,” Delmore said. “This is a community we love, care for and has given us that back in so many ways over and over and over again. It’s a plus to work to work in a community like this.”
City spokesman Grant Brown also offered up kind words for the Tacky Jacks proclamation.
“The folks at Tacky Jacks know how important it is for first responders, fire department, fire and rescue and their support team along with law enforcement that they be recognized,” Brown said. “Day in and day out, 24 hours a day, seven days a week they are out there protecting us and making us safe.”
