ORANGE BEACH – Orange Beach businessman George “Buddy” Skipper died Sunday in a traffic accident in Clarke County, according to officials.

Skipper, 76, was managing partner of Tacky Jack’s restaurant, which operates several locations in the area.

At the Orange Beach City Council meeting Monday night, members praised Skipper for his devotion to the community.

“We’ve seen his love for the community, the fire and police,” Councilman Jeff Boyd said. “He did fire and police appreciation week. They could take their families there and get a free meal for a whole week.”

Boyd said that when Hurricane Ivan struck in 2004, Skipper used his restaurant supplies, staff and facilities to feed people affected by the storm.

“Most people don’t have any idea,” Boyd said. “He emptied out all his freezers at first. Then we were in Waveland working at that time with the Christian Life Church, and he sent trucks almost every other day to feed almost 5,000 people there.”

“His outreach would go so far. You probably just can’t sit here and say it all, but he was a great anchor to this city, and he will be missed,” Boyd added.

Councilman Jeff Silvers said Skipper worked with first responders and others who had served their community and country.

“He gave so much and did so much and the outreach for those who served, not only in our community, but also served as veterans,” Silvers said. “As a business owner here, I just can’t speak enough. Our hearts go out to his family.”

Skipper purchased Tacky Jack’s in the 1990s, according to reports.
