SUMMERDALE — A male suspect being sought last week in the alleged abduction attempt of a 9-year-old female on Jackson Street turned himself in the day after the incident occurred.
Police Chief Dwain Riebeling said the suspect turned himself in on Sept. 6 after the news of the Sept. 5 incident made the airwaves.
As initially reported by police, the child was playing outside around 5 p.m. when her dog ran off. The child went after the dog and, while in pursuit of the dog, a pickup truck passed the girl, then turned around and came back. It was originally reported the male driver of the pickup asked the girl to get into his vehicle.
The suspect watched the news about the incident and knew he was the one police were looking for, Riebeling said. The man, who isn't being identified by police, said he was trying to help the girl with her dog.
While Riebeling said the girl was right to have run back home to her parents, he said there were some inconsistencies in the story that would make it difficult to present to the grand jury. The girl's parents didn't want to put the child through such an ordeal, Riebeling said.
