As "Survivor" fans are already counting down the days to the Feb. 25 premiere of the reality TV show's 50th season, a nationwide scavenger hunt invites viewers to take part in their own challenge for a chance to win a trip to the season's live finale.
Immunity idols have been hidden in each of the 50 U.S. states for the Survivor 50 Challenge ahead of the season's premiere, dubbed "In the Hands of the Fans." Clues to find each of the idols are released leading up to the show's premiere. Alabama's clue drops on Feb. 19.
To read the clues and to receive notifications of your state's challenge, you must register for an account on CBS's website for the challenge at www.survivor50challenge.com. Clues are in the form of riddles, which, when solved, reveal when to arrive at a specific location and where to find the hidden idol.
Vince Johnson, GCM's publisher who is a follower of the show, said a fan-based scavenger hunt like this has not happened in the show's history.
He said he wouldn't be surprised if the Alabama idol were to be Baldwin County, since the only Alabama native on this season's cast is south Baldwin's Jonathan Young, who was previously on "Survivor" in 2022 for season 42. He placed fourth.
"Naturally, you would think of Birmingham, maybe Montgomery or Huntsville, but since Jonathan's from down here maybe they'll bury it on the beach," Johnson said.
"Survivor" host Jeff Probst has previously called Young "one of the most physically intimidating challenge performers we've ever seen."
As clues have dropped across the country, hundreds of "Survivor" fans have staked out state and national parks, college campuses, caverns and landmarks waiting for the idol to be accessed.
One couple posted in a Facebook group for the idol search stating they completed the Colorado challenge. They said they arrived at 6:30 a.m. and waited in their place as one of the top 20 in line for the idol to open at 9 a.m. Others arrived at the location as early as 5 a.m.
Based on some of the posts and comments in the Survivor 50 Idol Search – Clues & Updates Facebook group, there is not an advantage to arriving on the scene first outside of bragging rights. However, some locations have a limit on how many people can enter at a time, limiting how many can visit the idol — and enter to win the sweepstake — the day it is dropped. Some comments are saying the only benefit to arriving early is not having to wait as long in line.
Other comments say that cast members have shown up at idol locations after the initial opening time, making it a "disadvantage" to be one of the first in line.
To enter for a chance to win, you must take a selfie with the idol and submit to the challenge website. Winners will be notified by the end of March.
