Sun Chiefs top Selma; FSCC women lose

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Some people refer to such vocal discussions as “reading them the riot act.”

Jack Robertson, Faulkner State’s veteran men’s basketball coach, coach, has a more subtle term for his halftime talks to his team when the Sun Chiefs haven’t performed to his satisfaction in the first half.

“Yeah, we had another little prayer meeting at halftime and evidently it worked,” Robertson said Tuesday after his team outscored George C. Wallace-Selma 49-31 in the second half Monday night to claim an important 76-67 road win on the Patriots’ court.

“I think just a look at the stat sheet will give you an idea of how the game went,” Robertson said. “We made 21 of 23 free throws in the second half and got the ball inside to our big guys a lot more, and that’s been the key to our successes this year.”

After shooting just 30 percent on field goals in the first half and only 28.6 percent on 2-point shots, Faulkner sank 50 percent of its 2-pointers in the second half.

Sophomore forward Paul Holmes and freshman guard Te·rrance Mitchell combined for 47 of the Sun Chiefs’ points, Holmes scoring 26 while also pulling down 14 rebounds. Mitchell scored 21 points and snared seven rebounds.

Sophomore guard David Johnson also scored in double figures for FSCC, finishing with 11 points. He also had eight rebounds for the Sun Chiefs, who trailed 36-27 at the half.

Chris Walker led the Patriots with 19 points and was joined in double-figures scoring by Benjamin Burroughs with 15 points and Patrick Delaine with 10.

It wasn’t as pleasant a road trip for FSCC’s women’s team. The Lady Sun Chiefs suffered their fifth consecutive loss, 59-57, to GCW’s Lady Patriots.

Faulkner led 26-24 at halftime but numerous missed free throws late in the second by the Lady Sun Chiefs proved fatal.

“We ended up making eight more free throws than they did, but we missed a bunch of our’s down the stretch,” FSCC women’s coach Linda Pitts said. “We were also without one of our starters, Crystal Morris, who was sick, and Destinee„ Dale, one of our top bench players, who developed a kidney infection, but the other girls have got step in and take up the slack,.”

Jessica Lindsey led Faulkner with 11 points. Kala Smith had 10 points and five steals, and Bay Minette’s Renee Watson came off the bench to score 10 points and sink two 3-point field goals.

Markeisha Mitchell scored nine FSCC points and grabbed six rebounds, all of the latter under the offensive backboards. Breunna Bester contributed eight points and a team-high seven rebounds in a reserve role.

Sheleta Banks, Lakeisha Johnson and Keshana Moore scored 13 points each for GCW-Selma. Moore sank four 3-pointers and Banks knocked down three jumpers from outside the arc.

The Faulkner men improved to 14-12 overall and 8-4 in Alabama Community College Conference South Division play. The Lady Sun Chiefs slid to 9-15 and 4-7. Both teams host arch rival Bishop State tonight, the women’s game tipping off at 5:15 with the men’s scheduled for 7 o’clock.
