BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Monthly Bay Minette Area Senior Citizens Organization meeting of officers was held June 23 and was filled with planning and good news which will be shared as it culminates, beginning with this article.
“Down Home Alabama” Pot Luck, July 9 at noon, is going to be a lot of fun. Tony Edwards and his band will entertain us. Mark your calendar, bring your favorite Southern dish and enjoy the hometown flavor of Alabama at its best?
Have you ever been to a gathering in Alabama in the summertime? Definitely will have watermelon. Storytelling of course, have you got one to tell? A fun day with old and new friends. And of course, bingo and exercise follow.
Speaking of water, don’t forget Flip/Flop Book Club meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, July 14. “Water for Elephants,” now I know it’s about circus life and the Great Depression but water for elephants? You may want to join us, as we critique this one.
Also, if you read a good book, let us know if you think it is a good reading for seniors. Brownbaggers, see you at 12:30 p.m.
Exercise class is growing, along with that ideas for the fall. We are enjoying the exercise balls. Nice to know we will need more. And we can balance the ball. Cool place to get your exercise at no cost.
Sunday, after the rain, the Firefly Concert was enjoyed by a lot of folks. What a nice touch of tradition we look forward to. Did you notice how many times some circled the block with their windows down. Of course not, you were to busy enjoying it. After Church, of course.
The Fourth of July is a City holiday but rumors are there will be some bridge players at the Senior Center. Is it the cappuccino?
But today is game day. Have you asked Hattie Scruggs lately how domino games are going? Be tactful. You’ve always heard the more the merrier. Well, how about you being a part of the merrier!
Friday, June 27, was movie nite and you missed a good one. “Yours, Mine and Ours,” with Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball. Told you it would be funny. No intermission. We socialized before and after the movie. The birthday cake furnished by Ann Benoist, was enjoyed by all. Angel food cake with rainbow sherbet.
There is a dance planned for Thursday, July 17, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Senior Center. We hope the first of many. Tony Edwards has been encouraging us to get the Senior dances started back. He will kick off the first dance by furnishing the music. Light refreshments will be served. Valet parking will also be available. It will be shortly after gametime.
Hope you enjoy celebrating our Independence with family and friends. The Stockton Fireworks display will be Thursday with lots of added attractions. Remember the Bay Minette fireworks at dusk at the stadium. There are a lot of yard parties around town that plan around the fireworks display.
Even Oakwood residents can enjoy the fireworks from the front of their facility. Bay Minette has a beautiful display of fireworks that is enjoyed by all. Thanks to the Rotary Club and the city of Bay Minette.
With election talk in the air, remember those who made our country what it is! Don’t let anything or anyone take that away from us. Learn as much as you can about the candidates, not just what is in the news. Do vote your convictions.
God Bless America, land that we love, pray about it, and ask yourself, “What can I do for my country?” Stand up and be counted on election day. Our pastor gave a challenging sermon this past Sunday. Christians need to pray for a revival in our country. That’s how it all began in America.
Happy Fourth of July!!
Thought for the week: What we do upon some great occasion will probably depend on what we already are; and what we are will be the result of previous years of self-discipline.

May God bless you until we meet again.
