SummerTide workshop returns to Pleasure Island

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Improv, dance, music and scene work are just some of the skills budding actors can learn during the SummerTide Children’s Theatre Camp, June 10 to June 28 at South Baldwin Community Theatre in Gulf Shores.

The children’s theatre camp is taught by cast and crew members with the University of Alabama’s SummerTide Theatre. This year, SummerTide will present the musical, “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown,” June 6 to July 4 at SBCT.

SummerTide Theatre has been performing shows at SBCT since 2004. In addition to its own show, the cast and crew conduct workshops for area students.

“We are thrilled to have the University of Alabama’s drama department conduct our summer children’s theater workshop,” said Joyce James, SBCT board president. “The students in the workshops get the benefit of professional instruction from the members of SummerTide’s cast and crew.”

The first week of camp, June 10 to June 14, is geared toward beginning actors. Campers will learn the basic elements of theater such as story, dance and music. Intermediate level actors are the focus of the second week of camp, June 17 to June 21, and they will be taught monologues, simple scene work, dance and music.

The workshop during the week of June 24 to June 28 is for advanced actors, and will include instruction on scene work, comedy, creative writing, dance and music.

All of the camps are from 9 a.m. to noon each day, Tuesday through Saturday. There is no age restriction for any of the workshops, but campers must be able to read.

Cost of the workshop is $100 per camper, each week.

Early registration is encouraged, James said, because the workshops tend to fill quickly, however, campers may register at 8 a.m. the first day of each week of camp.

For more information or reservations, call the theatre at (251) 968-6721.

SBCT is at 2022 W. Second St. in Gulf Shores, across the street from the Bodenhamer Recreation Center.
