SUMMERDALE — A Summerdale man is in custody after allegedly destroying police property over the weekend.
According to a police report, at 1:29 a.m. Saturday, 22-year-old Nathan Andrew King of Summerdale drove a blue Ford Explorer into the Summerdale Police Department’s parking, then proceeded to repeatedly plow the vehicle into a parked Summerdale police truck.
“Surveillance video shows the suspect taking perfect aim at the patrol vehicle and ramming from both sides and the rear,” Summerdale Police Chief Eddie Ingram said in a written statement. “The patrol vehicle sustained severe damage and will cost in the thousands to repair.”
But the Explorer didn’t escape damage.
“The vehicle driven by King was also damaged and will likely cost $3,000 to repair,” Ingram said.
According to police reports, Summerdale Police Officer Vince Miller pursued King and apprehended him 4 miles away from the incident.
Ingram said King’s motive for the alleged incident was uncertain.
“To my knowledge, we’ve had no direct contact with King and we're extremely puzzled why he picked our vehicle to destroy,” Ingram said. “We have more than two dozen surveillance cameras inside and outside that building so everything you do is recorded. The video definitely paid off in this incident. That goes to show you that ‘crazy’ can happen anywhere or anytime.”
At press time, King is being held at the Baldwin County Jail on charges of criminal mischief in the first degree, with possible additional charges pending.
