Summerdale man charged with making terrorist threats to Baldwin DHR

SUMMERDALE, Ala. — A Summerdale man was arrested and charged with making terrorist threats on Friday, Feb. 4 after being overheard allegedly threatening to “shoot people and kill people” following a phone conversation with DHR.

James Edward Coburn Jr., 51 of Summerdale was arrested after a Department of Human Resources case worker contacted the Robertsdale Police Department and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department, according to a BCSO release.

According to the case worker, Coburn made a phone call to the DHR office in Robertsdale. After the call ended, the line was not completely disconnected and the case worker overheard Coburn making a threat that he was going to “shoot people and kill people.”

After contacts were made to the Robertsdale Police Department and Sheriff’s office, the Robertsdale Police Department contacted the Summerdale Police Department and warned them of possible retribution to the Summerdale Elementary School because of past threats to DHR by Coburn and the fact Coburn’s children attend the school.

Summerdale School was notified and went into lock down for a short period of time.

Deputies went to County Road 32 and Highway 59 to meet and possibly travel near the Coburn residence to insure that Coburn was still there and not en route to the school.

Coburn was then spotted at Rickens’ Market where he was buying fuel. A traffic stop was initialed and Coburn was detained without incident.

After deputies contacted DHR by phone and confirmed the threats, Coburn was arrested and charged with making terrorist threats. Coburn was transported to Foley Police Department without incident where he was awaiting transport to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Correction Center at the time of the BCSO release.
