SUMMERDALE - The Summerdale Volunteer Fire Department, Seminole Volunteer Fire Department and Bon Secour Volunteer Fire Department have teamed up to apply for a grant program towards a new radio system. If awarded, the grant will pay 90% for 24 radios, five trucks and one base station, with a 10% match required. The departments are asking for approximately $150,000 for the new system.
Along with the grant for the radio system, the town council learned of a possible grant program that could potentially assist with costs towards the future fire station. The town council approved designs to begin for the new station last year. The project was put on hold in the hopes that material costs would decrease before going to bid.
“We’ve been informed that there’s possible monies coming down that will pay to build a fire station,” said Mayor David Wilson. “That’s another reason we can hold on this a little longer because we’ll be way ahead of the game with having the blueprints prepared to submit for that grant. Even though we have all the funding in place to move forward, I think we hold on just a little bit longer before we get bids on that.”
The funds to construct the new fire station were included in the FY21/22 budget.
