Student’s spinal meningitis not contagious for casual contacts

DAPHNE, Ala.—The Baldwin County Health Department notified Baldwin County Public Schools nurse supervisor today that a Daphne Middle School student has been diagnosed with neisseria meningitidis, better known as spinal meningitis.

According to the health department: classmates or people of casual contact are not felt to be at risk. Close contacts are asked to contact a physician as quickly as possible. Close contacts include household members and close personal contacts who shared secretions through kissing, use of the same drinking utensils or food items.

Daphne Middle School sent a letter home to parents last week, explaining the situation.
