James F. Stieff, 84, a native of Louisville, Ky., and a resident of Gulf Shores, died Sunday, May 25, 2008.

He was born Nov. 10, 1923, to James and Clara Stieff. He attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, class of 1948, and worked for Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors for 31 years. He was a volunteer at the Pensacola Naval Air Museum.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Ted Carlson; daughter-in-law, Dusty Stieff; brother-in-law, John Cohoat.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn J. King Stieff of Gulf Shores; five sons, Preston (Pam) Stieff of Sandy, Utah, John Stieff of Indianapolis, Paul (Cathy) Stieff of New Berlin, Wis., Michael (Wendy) Stieff of Wentzville, Mo., and Quintin (Ruth) Stieff of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters, Marianne (Don) Carlson of DeLand, Fla., and Belinda (Keith) Diko of Greenwood, Ind.; stepson, Jeffrey (Linda) Betsch of Alphretta, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Jamie (Gary) McGaughey of Louisville, Ky., and Jodi (Tim) Smith of Avon, IN; sister, Mary Arline Cohoat of Fishers, Ind.; 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 30, at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, 435 W. Troy Ave., Indianapolis, Ind. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m.
