Stella Maris to honor seafarers with Maritime Day celebration in Daphne

Posted

The Shrine of the Holy Cross will host a special Stella Maris celebration May 23 to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of current and former Merchant Mariners and seafarers as part of National Maritime Day observances.

National Maritime Day is recognized annually May 22 to honor the nation’s maritime industry and the men and women who work at sea supporting commerce, transportation and national defense. Locally, the celebration will continue the following day with a special Mass and reception in Daphne.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. May 23 at the Shrine of the Holy Cross, 612 Main St. in Daphne. A reception will follow in the Father Vincent Warren Parish Hall.

Organizers said the celebration will recognize both past and present seafarers and provide the community an opportunity to honor those who have worked in the maritime industry.

Stella Maris is part of a worldwide Catholic ministry network serving seafarers, fishers and others connected to the sea. The organization provides spiritual support, hospitality and practical assistance to maritime workers who often spend long periods away from home while working aboard ships and vessels around the world.

Community members are invited to submit the names of past or present seafarers to be recognized during the event. Those planning to attend the reception are also asked to RSVP by emailing sohcfaithformation@gmail.com.
