Split Senate District 32 causing confusion

Posted

Irate voters at Daphne Civic Center, who attempted to cast ballots in the District 32 Senate race today, but who are listed in Senate District 22, have filed a flood of complaints after poll workers turned them away, according to Probate Judge Adrian Johns.

"There are lots of upset people who showed up to vote today and learned they were in District 22," Johns said Tuesday afternoon, concerning the special election to replace Bradley Byrne, R-Montrose, who resigned to become chancellor of the state’s two-year college system.. "There were lots of complaint forms filled out which will go to the Secretary of State."

Johns said poll workers at the county’s seven split precincts have maps to show voters the configuration of the precincts and voters’ lists for eligible ballot casting.

"That helped them understand, but there are still upset people," Johns said, adding that he expected a 15 to 20 percent turnout for the district which emcompasses roughly 90,000 eligible voters in the county, or 90 percent.

Absentee election manager Jane Still said Tuesday she has received 138 absentee ballots, also an indication of low voter interest.

Polls close at 7 p.m. Individual precinct voting results will be available on the Probate Court Web site as they are compiled, beginning around 7:30 p.m. Go to co.baldwin.al.us, click on Probate Court and follow the eiection prompts.

As precinct results are tallied, a precinct number will illuminate on the right side of the screen. Cumulative votes and percentages will be listed at the left side of the screen and individual precinct results will appear in the center of the Web page.

Election results also will be posted early Wednesday at baldwincountynow.com.
