Dr. Clarence Andrw Spencer Jr., 79, a longtime resident of Tuscaloosa and a resident of Orange Beach, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2007.

He was a graduate of Stetson University, the University of Tennessee and the University of Alabama, where he received a Ph.D in commerce and business administration. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War where he served his country faithfully. He was also a member of the U.S. Coast Guard.

He was a professor at the College of Commerce and Business Administration at the University of Alabama. Many students were touched by his wisdom, humor and wit. He retired after 35 years of service and is fondly remembered by collegues and students alike.

He was married to Virginia Lee Davis for 56 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Monica Spencer; and a son, Clarence Andrew Spencer III.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Spencer; Carol (Mitch) Harbin of Arab; two sons, Homer (Jenny) Spencer of Gadsden and Charles (Beverlie) Spencer of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Laura Harbin, Ben Harbin, Christin Spencer, Andrew Spencer, Bentley Roberts, Blakeley Roberts, and Ericka Roseberry; his special loving dog and constant companion, Captain Ono.

Funeral services and visitation were held Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, Gulf Shores. Graveside services were held Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.

Honorary pallbearers were the grandsons and Jim Milford, Rusty Robinson, Mike Ballard, J.D. Corriher, Ed Culbreth and James Walters.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, 616 Fort Morgan Road, Gulf Shores, AL 36542.

Arrangements were made by Hughes Cremation & Funeral Services, Daphne.
