SPANISH FORT, Ala. — The Spanish Fort High Toros put on pink to bring in green for breast cancer research Tuesday night.
The Toros also brought in enough runs to stay undefeated in the Alabama-Oklahoma Challenge baseball tournament with a 7-5 win over Deer Creek, Okla.
Proceeds from the first Breast Cancer Awareness game went to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Honored guests were Frances Beasley, mother of Toro pitcher/outfielder Chris Beasley, and Margaret Davis, mother of Lady Toros alumna and two-sport standout Leah Davis.
“We just wanted to find a way to honor them and get people out to help raise money for breast cancer research,” said SFHS baseball coach Tommy Walker.
“Both of them mean so much to this school. Chris’ mom was diagnosed a couple years ago and Mrs. Davis back when Leah was still here. But the way they persevered and continued to stay so involved is really an inspiration to others and they set a great example for how to battle through those struggles with dignity and class.”
Walker said they plan to make the benefit an annual event.
The defending Class 5A state champion Toros are now 2-1 with the Deer Creek, Okla. Antlers who made it to their 5A semifinals last season.
“They are a good team and they are well-coached,” Walker said. “I’m proud of our guys responding like they did. And it's good that Chris had a good night for his mom tonight. He had a double and a single.”
Beasley also scored a run in the third inning off a sacrifice bunt by Troy Brown to cut the Antler lead to 3-2. Cole Jarman (2-1) pitched six innings of relief for the win and had an RBI triple to make it 5-5 in the fifth. Zac Fowler had tied the score at 3-3 in the third with a solo homer. After the Toros fell behind again in the sixth, Rocky McCord doubled in the go-ahead and winning run in the sixth.
“Every time they scored, we answered,” Walker said. “That’s always good.”
