MOBILE, Ala. – The boys' from the hill came to Mobile and what a game it was.
The Spanish Fort Toros returned to E.E. Delaney Stadium Friday night looking for a win and a spot in the 5A quarter-finals next Friday.
While eighth-ranked St. Paul's led in total yardage (353-284) and first down completions (23-9) for the night, Spanish Fort was able to put points on the board with big, physical plays, putting to rest the Saints two game winning streak over the Toros.
"We came out tonight to win this game. They'd beaten us the past two times," said Spanish Fort Coach Bryant Vincent. "The key was being more physical than they were."
The Saints would get on the board first with a 36-yard, Alexander Hudson field goal on their second possession of the game.
Davares Ambrose would answer with the first of two big Spanish Fort plays, breaking away for a 74-yard touchdown with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter.
With 9:17 remaining in the first half, Ameriol Finley wrapped up a 73-yard drive with a touchdown pass to Adam Adcock for a 14-3 lead.
Hoping to score before intermission, the Saints Jacob Coker commanded a 12-play 74 yard drive that was upended by a Blake Dees interception at the 10 with two seconds remaining in the half.
The Saints would make it a four point game early in the fourth quarter, with Kylen Towner scoring on a 6-yard reverse with a Hudson extra point.
Finley exhibited his speed with a 50-yard run on a fourth-and-one keep from the 29-yard-yard line and would score three plays later as the Toros began to close the door on the Saints 21-10 with 5:32 remaining in the game.
On their next possession, the Toros managed the clock, using 3-minutes of play before Joel Poe stepped into the Spanish Fort end-zone for a safety with one second remaining, giving St.Pauls a two point gift.
The Toros' Ameriol Finley rushed for 104 yards and a score on 14 carries, and threw for 58 yards and a touchdown. Davares Ambrose contributed 135 yards and a score on 15 carries, while Robert Creighton gets credit for three extra point completions.
The Saints' Jacob Coker was 14-of-26 passing for 150 yards with one interception. Jordan Huff carried 26 times for 126 yards, Ryan Myles caught four passes for 46 yards and Dalton Rentz was four for 43 yards for the night.
"We weren't very consistent on offense tonight. Our defense gave up fourteen points it shouldn't have." Saints coach Jimmy Perry said. "They are a good football team."
Spanish Fort (10-2) will host Hueytown in the quarter-finals on Friday. St. Pauls finished 10-2.
