GULF SHORES— The Lady Toros of Spanish Fort defeated Rehobeth 8-0 in the finals of the South Regional 5A championship Saturday night. SFHS advanced along with runner-up RHS to the state tournament at Lagoon Park in Montgomery this weekend.
Spanish Fort right hander Morgan Druhan was the tournament MVP and was the winning pitcher in all four games. The South Alabama bound signee also hit a grand slam in the finals as well.
"I am so proud of the way the kids went out there and took care of business," said SF head coach Leigh Jones. "They played a very complete tournament with great pitching, hitting and defense. They played with a lot of heart and emotion and got the job done. Hannah Matthews and Amie Kelly led the way offensively."
The No. 10-ranked Lady Toros faced and defeated three other top-10 teams along the way defeating seventh-ranked Eufaula 3-0, fifth-ranked St. Pauls 6-3, and second-ranked Rehobeth 8-0. They also topped Monroe County 9-2.
SF (37-15) will play the runner up of Albertville and Hartselle at noon on Friday in Montgomery.
Other Baldwin teams did not make the state tournament. The Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins were knocked out of the 5A tournament with losses to Rehobeth and Greenville.
In 6A, Baldwin County High's Lady Tigers were bumped out with losses to Mary Montgomery (4-2) and Robertsdale 5-4.
Robertsdale had a loss to Theodore earlier and then faced Fairhope in an elimination game with the Lady Pirates moving on with a 3-1 win. FHS had beaten Murphy 10-0, but lost to No. 5 Satsuma 8-0.
Fairhope needed just one more win to make the state tournament cut and held a 1-0 lead over Baker until the seventh when the Honeybees took the lead for a 5-1 win. It was the Area 3 champion Lady Pirates' best fast-pitch season record ever at 32-10-1. FHS also won the first-ever Baldwin County tournament title at Spanish Fort to kick off the season in February.
