LOXLEY — The Spanish Fort National team exploded in the fourth inning, leading to an early 10-run-rule ending.
The burst of runs came suddenly in what had been a very tight championship game.
The Spanish Fort National League coach-pitch (Peanut) all-stars won the Dixie Youth District Seven Championship last Thursday with a 15-5 win over Mobile's Municipal Park American team at Loxley.
It was a come-from-behind, and-then-some, kind of victory as the SFN all-stars trailed 4-3 earlier.
Head coach Casey Wilkinson said his team came out flat but adjusted well at the plate and found a good ball-slugging rhythm.
“Once they started laying down some bunts, they started seeing the ball better and then (I could) let them swing away and they hit the ball hard,” he said.
Driving the ball deep as well as some short balls forced some bad throws and his team responded with good base running.
“(They) got into a rhythm and forced some bad throws," he said. "Base running has been the key to this whole tournament for us and it was big again tonight.”
His team had taken an early lead Wednesday, but then had to wait until Thursday due to weather delays.
When play resumed SFN had a 2-0 lead with a man on third with no outs in the bottom of the second inning. Carson Whaley scored on a sac-bunt by Charles Wood to make it 3-0 to start the third.
Municipal's American League all-stars responded right away, however, with four quick runs and the lead.
But the bottom of the third saw Spanish Fort retake the lead by a 7-4 margin.
Matthew Lipham led off with a double and went to third off a ball put into play by Hayden Pittman and scored on a sac bunt by Logan Morgan for the 4-4 tying run. A rally including a single by Garland Horst and fielder’s choice forced defensive errors by Wyatt Wilkinson, Chase White, Charles Wood, Elliott Johnson's RBI single and Alex Back produced the 7-4 advantage.
The Municipal Park American team added a run in the top of the fourth, but no more. In the bottom half Spanish Fort National added five more runs.
