SPANISH FORT, Ala. – Spanish Fort is already famous for it's battles, but one more may go down in history tonight as the Toros defend the Hill against the mighty Rattlers of LeFlore in a 5A Region 1 clash.
The Rattlers have not been strangers to opponents' end zones this year averaging 30-plus points per game and losing only once to 6A Davidson.
SFHS coach Bryant Vincent expects the greatest test of his defense so far.
"We are going to have to find some ways to slow down LeFlore on offense," he said. "They have multiple players that can crank up their band any given play. This will be the biggest challenge that our defense will face up to this point, they are extremely talented. LeFlore is very balanced on offense, but I expect to see them throw more against us because of our front seven. We must control the ball and clock on offense. We must fight to move the chains and play very physical up front."
Kickoff between 5-1, 2-1 SFHS and 5-1, 3-0 LHS is set for 7 p.m.
Daphne will be looking to extend their win streak to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in region play at Robertsdale.
Ranked No. 3 as of last Friday's win over Satsuma, the Trojans must contain the Golden Bears' option attack and maintain focus said DHS coach Glenn Vickery.
"We need to play at a high level on both sides of the ball," he said. "This is the time of year some teams are ahead because of staying on track mentally and performing. Coach (Scott) Phelps has the Golden Bears playing well. They will always play aggressively on offense and defense."
Vickery added that the Trojans need to focus in practice as well as the game to get ready for Robertsdale's multiple set offense led by Caleb Summerall at quarterback. "Caleb has been a good quarterback for them forever. He's fun to watch when you're not playing them. He is a true competitor. (He does) a great job of running the option and play-action passes. They have good skill people as well."
The Trojan defense has held opponents to one TD per game on average so far this season.
In other action tonight, Fairhope hosts Foley, BCHS plays Williamson at Ladd Stadium and Bayside Academy hosts Trinity.
