DAPHNE, Ala. — Spanish Fort’s girls won their fourth-straight Baldwin County cross-country title Saturday at Trione Park in Daphne. The Toro girls defeated Fairhope 40 to 52 with Robertsdale third at 77. Daphne was fourth with 96 and Foley finished with 103.
Fairhope sophomore Hannah Evans was the individual winner with a best time of 20:18.50. It was her second straight individual county title for the Lady Pirates. But Spanish Fort’s best five of Linsey Hrabovsky in second (21:15.16); Sarah Carrico, 10th; Madison Copeland, 15th; Jackie Smith, 17th; Katrina Garofano in 18th sealed the win.
The rest of the top 10 were Trista Phelps of Robertsdale third, followed by Kaleigh Akers of Daphne, Molly Pinnix, Charlotte Gill and Iris Harrison of Bayside Academy, Jordan Peterson of Daphne and Carlisle Calmetti of Bayside ninth.
SFHS head coach Michael Rauch said considering the youth of his one-senior team along with some injuries, the Lady Toros ran a good race.
“We’re just a young team right now. We’re depending on seventh graders and eighth graders. Linsey who took second is an eighth grader. So is Sarah Carrico. Maddie Grace who finished all-county (top-20) is just a seventh grader. One of my best runners Jordan Huber (sophomore) is resting an injury. So considering the youth and the injuries they ran well and I can’t complain. The boys ran well too, but really young, again a lot of seventh graders coming up. But we’re learning every week.”
The lone senior on the SFHS girls team, Jackie Smith, was especially pleased with the team win since she has been running with the SF Bulls since her seventh grade year and has never lost the county meet as a Lady Toro.
“I’m kind of like the team mom,” she said. “This meant a lot to me. Linsey Hrabovsky really got it done for us getting second. We held pace most of the time, I think we needed to hang on closer with (the leader) Hannah Evans (Fairhope) and we tried, but she was on her game today. So props to her for coming in first, but, we hung on and got the team win. It’s nice as the only one who’s been here for six years now and knows the legacy of Spanish Fort cross country. I think this is five years in a row the girls have won county, so to keep it going as a senior, the only senior, really means a lot to me, but I have to thank my teammates.
“I told the girls before, 'Guys we have to win this. We are the ones to beat. Let’s just keep it up. I want to come back next year and y’all are still the one to beat.’ So I’m proud of them, especially with Jordan out, they came through. What more can you ask?”
Evans won the individual title for the second straight year and said she felt better than she had all year.
“Today I just felt really good and was able to just go. When I started off early in the season I just wasn’t mentally prepared,” she said. “But coach (Tim) Yahr helped me. I’ve just been trying to keep running with focus but no pressure. And today, that’s really how it felt, just focus and no pressure. I’m really proud of our team today. The team did an amazing job getting second against Spanish Fort. That is like a win for us. They are good and I’m happy for the guys too for winning the boys.”
