Spanish Fort council pays for school bleachers

SPANISH FORT — The city council recently passed a resolution to provide support to the Baldwin County School Board for nearly $356,000 for the construction of bleachers for the high school.

The money will go to the construction of stadium bleachers for the baseball and softball teams of Spanish Fort High School. According to Mayor Joseph Bonner, the price tag is so high because of safety regulations and accessibility requirements.

“A special thanks to all the cities that help us, it’s not just Spanish Fort,” school board member Frank Trione said at the separate meeting. “If they didn’t help, we would be in a world of hurt. But because of their financial help, we are able to provide a quality education to the children of Baldwin County.”

The money provided by the city can only be used for the construction of the bleachers. The school board will be bidding out the construction and will be in charge of the construction as well. Cities are allowed to channel funds to schools in their districts.

Many cities in Baldwin County have been doing so lately because of large cutbacks at the county level for education.

“The reason the cities are stepping up is they see the work done in the schools,” said school board president Angie Swiger. “The principals and teachers are doing a fabulous job in the classrooms and it shows. It makes people want to get on board and help.”
