SPANISH FORT — Construction on a new park right on Mobile Bay is officially underway.
On Friday, Feb. 13, the City of Spanish Fort broke ground on Valor Park, a 2-acre park between Felix's Fish Camp and the USS Alabama along US-98. The park will feature a scenic overview of Mobile Bay along with plenty of green space that will include sidewalks, picnic tables and a pavilion.
The project began under the city's previous administration led by Mayor Mike McMillan, with his successor, Brad Bass, overseeing the groundbreaking. The project was funded using a $3 million GoMESA grant.
Bass said the city also received a $7,500 grant from the National Association of Realtors to help fund the project.
"Mayor McMillan and the past council really looked at this project going back as far as 2018 and before with the causeway master plan, and [I'm] happy to get this started as a whole," Bass said. "Valor Park will now be the new standard going into Spanish Fort when you come across the causeway from Mobile."
Valor Park is expected to be open to the public by the end of this summer.
