SPANISH FORT, Alabama — Spanish Fort improved to 6-0 overall and picked up their first 5A Region 1 win with a 10-0 shutout over Citronelle at home on The Hill Friday.

The red and black bulls trampled the Wildcats, taking an 8-0 lead into the half and needed just two possessions to end the match by mercy rule.

Eric Jaegge scored two goals and Jesse McCarthy had three, while Gavin Weems, Caleb Gautreaux, George Clarke, Ross Nelson and Rhett Johnson scored one each for Spanish Fort.

“I’m proud of our guys,” Toros coach Mitch Warfield said. “We had Mardi Gras holidays and so with five days off, coming out of all of that and going right into a region and playing like this tonight makes me feel really good right now. I thought we might be rusty, but we had a good practice and played good tonight and I don’t think it would have mattered who we played. We just played up to our abilities. It was good to see them play like they are capable of.”

The first-year coach said his four seniors Eric Jaegge, Nick Hackman, Rhett Johnson, Caleb Gautreaux have been playing well and helping him get the team to play its best.

Hackman has most of the minutes in goal for the Toros, who have only allowed one goal in their 6-0, 1-0 opening run for the 2012 season. Five matches have been shutouts.

The Toros will host Vigor Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for another region match up, host 3A Bayside Academy Wednesday for an Eastern Shore bragging rights showdown at 7 p.m. And SFHS will host Region 1 foe Faith Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.

Girls: Spanish Fort 10, Citronelle 0

Spanish Fort’s Lady Toros shut out visiting Citronelle Friday 10-0 on The Hill in their first 5A Region 1 match of 2012.

Ashley Wooten’s 15-yarder finished off the Wildcats about 36 minutes early by the 10-goal mercy rule after Samantha Lester made it 9-0 to open the second half.

SFHS led 8-0 at the break thanks to Jessica Watts’ four assists, two goals each by Alyssa Brandle and Rebekah Diring, one each by Kathleen Mulvaney, Whitney Pittman, Summer Stout and Watts. Johanna Scott picked up the shutout for SF which improved to 2-1-1 overall and 1-0 in region play.

“I was real pleased with the way we moved the ball tonight,” Spanish Fort coach Barclay Kercher said. “We made smart passes. Jessica Watts played a great game. Kept us moving as a team. We got to play a lot of people and we played together with purpose. It’s good to see that this early.”

The Spanish Fort girls will host Vigor Tuesday for another region match up and will host 3A Bayside Academy Wednesday for an Eastern Shore bragging rights showdown. Both games start at 5 p.m. at SFHS.

On Friday, The Lady Toros will host Faith Academy’s Lady Rams in an important Region 1 battle with kick off is set for 5:30 p.m.
