SPANISH FORT, Alabama — The Spanish Fort Toros won the deciding game of a three-game series against Russell County on Saturday to advance to the Class 5A state semifinals.
The Toros (34-8) will host Chilton County in a best-of-three semifinal series starting Friday, with the winner advancing to the state finals in Montgomery.
Spanish Fort sophomore Will Luft (3-0) pitched a complete game with no walks to get the win in the deciding game, a 9-2 win over the Warriors (41-12).
The Toros scored five runs in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Matt Hall was walked with the bases loaded, then Blain Crain was hit by a pitch, scoring another run. Tate Godwin’s three-RBI triple put the Toros up 7-2, then Godwin scored on a wild pitch to give Spanish Fort an 8-2 lead.
Spanish Fort bounced back to win the last two games after dropping the opener 3-1. Russell County’s Ray Castillo struck out eight in a three-hitter to get the win, while Heith Brown took the loss for the Toros, who scored when Andrew Ferrell doubled in Crain. Rock Rucker homered for the Warriors.
The Toros won the second game 5-4 behind Jesse McCord’s five-strikeout complete game and two-run homer in the first inning.
Spanish Fort scored three more runs in the top of the sixth. Godwin drove in Matthew Harris, Crain walked to load the bases, then Brian Lane hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Matt Hall. Godwin then scored when Russell County pitcher Jesse Nelson made an error on an infield grounder from Ferrell.
Russell County scored to runs in the bottom of the seventh when Trevor Davis doubled in a run then scored on a wild pitch. Rucker came up with two outs, but McCord struck him out to end the game.
