Bayside Academy, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach discover first opponents in state bracket

With the dust settled on the South Super Regional tournament, five of Baldwin County’s teams move onto the state tournament with Spanish Fort (Class 6A) and Bayshore Christian (Class 2A) moving on with No. 1 seeds.

The Toros finished their regional bracket with 3-1 wins over Pelham and Bayside Academy in the semifinals and finals, respectively. The Eagles closed with a sweep over Tuscaloosa Academy in the semifinal before a 3-1 win over G.W. Long to claim their third consecutive regional title.

Bayside Academy (Class 6A) and Gulf Shores (Class 5A) enter the state bracket with No. 2 seeds and Orange Beach (Class 4A) earned a No. 3 seed.

The state tournament is slated to begin early next week in Birmingham, check out who the local representatives will see in the first round.

Class 6A

Oxford Yellow Jackets (North No. 4) at Spanish Fort Toros (South No. 1), Oct. 26, 10:30 a.m.

Winner draws the victor of the Hartselle-Pelham first-round matchup in the state semifinals later that day.

Oxford won regional matches over Shades Valley and Muscle Shoals before a loss to eventual second-place Hartselle. The Yellow Jackets fell in the consolation match for the final seed from the north regional bracket.

Bayside Academy Admirals (South No. 2) at Hazel Green Trojans (North No. 3), Oct. 26, 10:30 a.m.

Winner draws the victor of the Mountain Brook-Northridge first-round matchup in the state semifinals later that day. The Admirals took down Hazel Green in a Sept. 24 tournament match, 2-0.

The Trojans from Hazel Green earned region wins over Mortimer Jordan and Homewood before a loss to eventual champion Mountain Brook.

A fifth meeting between Spanish Fort and Bayside Academy this season is still on the table. If both teams win their first-round and semifinal matchups, it will be an all-Baldwin County state final between the Toros and Admirals.

Class 5A

Gulf Shores Dolphins (South No. 2) at Jasper Vikings (North No. 3), Oct. 25, 9 a.m.

Winner draws the victor of the Westminster-Providence Christian first-round matchup in the state semifinals.

Gulf Shores is set for its first state tournament appearance since 2011.

Jasper earned regional victories over Douglas and Brewer before a loss to eventual champion Westminster Christian. A 3-2 win on the consolation match salvaged a three-seed for the Vikings.

Class 4A

Priceville Bulldogs (North No. 2) at Orange Beach Makos (South No. 3), Oct. 25, 1:30 p.m.

Winner draws the victor of the Montgomery Catholic-West Morgan first-round matchup in the state semifinals.

Priceville went all the way to the regional final with wins over Ashville, Cleburne County and Madison County but Deshler’s 3-0 win left the Bulldogs with the runner-up spot.

Class 2A

Fyffe Red Devils (North No. 4) at Bayshore Christian Eagles (South No. 1), Oct. 25, noon

Winner draws the victor of the Pleasant Valley-Tuscaloosa Academy first-round matchup in the state semifinals.

Fyffe grabbed regional wins over Cold Springs and Altamont before falling to eventual champion Donoho in the semifinals and Lindsay Lane Christian in the consolation round.
