Spanish Fort authorizes police equipment agreement

Spanish Fort Police Department will get new equipment and training items such as body cameras, tasers and a drone package.

Spanish Fort City Council unanimously approved a resolution to authorize Mayor Brad Bass to sign an agreement with Axon Enterprise Inc. and its Canadian affiliate to provide the police department with the equipment.

The resolution does not include a dollar figure, but documents show the Axon quotes provided a total of over $75,000, which include:

  • $22,923.80 over five years for six Axon Body 4 cameras, which includes an eight-bay charging dock along with virtual training for $1,475
  • $23,855 for a Axon Air Skydio X10 drone package
  • $28,794.96 over four years for TASER 10 units and related training.

The city will buy the equipment through Sourcewell, a national government purchasing cooperative, which City Attorney David Conner said the Alabama Department of Public Examiners have approved for purchasing, meaning the city does not have to do an individual bid process.
