Spanish Fort appeals post office closing

SPANISH FORT – City officials are asking the federal appeals court in Washington to overturn a ruling closing the Spanish Fort Post Office.

The Spanish Fort Post Office on US 90 closed in January. US Postal Service officials said the contract to operate the facility had expired and no new contract was selected. Since then, post office box holders have been directed to change their addresses to Daphne.

After the closing was announced, the city of Spanish Fort appealed the decision to the Postal Regulatory Commission. The United States Postal Service filed a motion to dismiss the appeal. The Postal Regulatory Commission dismissed the appeal on the grounds that the Spanish Fort Post Office is a contract post office and not eligible for the appeals process.

The Postal Regulatory Commission ruled that it did not have jurisdiction to hear the appeal based on its finding that the Spanish Fort Post Office was not a “sole source” of service in the community.

Mayor Mike McMillan said city officials do not agree with the commission’s decision. He said the City Council will appeal the decision to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia District.
