GULF SHORES, Ala. - On Tuesday, June 5, at the “Party With A Purpose” annual brunch, the South Baldwin Newcomers Club announced Charlene Doody as the new president for 2012-13.
Charlene will announce her club board at the August brunch. At the anual brunch, the South Baldwin Newcomers' Club lived up to its motto, “Party With a Purpose,” when it presented checks totalling $20,500 to local charities and scholarships to three deserving local students.
The recipents of the monies from the club are as follows:
Alabama Free Clinic – Baldwin County Bill Chambers $1,000. No-charge medical care and health education programs for adults without medical insurance. Located in Bay Minette, Robertsdale and primarily serving needs related to high blood pressure and diabetes.
Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, Patti Hall, $1,000
Alabama Sheriff’s Boys’ Ranch Kay Herrin $1,000. Christian home for boys whose home environment does not meet their needs. They are at- risk children placed at the ranch through no fault of their own.
Baldwin Pops – John Allen Scholarship, Dr Roger James $1,000. Organization of volunteer musicians who are committed to enhancing the cultural environment of Baldwin County by providing free concerts and a music scholarship to a local high school senior. Also, one or two underclass students are given an award to attend summer music camps.
All About Dogs Coastal Rescue, Bev Hicks, $1,000. An all volunteer, nonprofit animal rescue and placement center in Bon Secour.
BARC Christine Sherwin, $1,000. Baldwin Animal Rescue Center includes spay/neuter programs & facilitates adoptions.
Christian Service Center, Linda Chapelle, $1,000. Provides emergency financial aid and food to families in need in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan. Also includes Christmas toys program, wheelchairs etc., Meals on Wheels and prescription assistance.
Community Hospice of Baldwin County, Lana Wheeler, $1,000. A nonprofit hospice agency providing community based home care for terminally ill patients.
Ecumenical Ministries, Pam Meredith, $1,000. Assists people in meeting their basic and unexpected needs including emergency aid, food, home repairs, prescription assistance, Meals on Wheels Thrift Shop, Toys at Christmas. Serves South Baldwin and Eastern Shore.
Family Promise, Mike Brokowsky, $1,000. Help for homeless families by using church facilities and volunteers to serve families in crisis with children in Baldwin County
Foster Care, South Baldwin County, Kathryn Watson and Tina Green, $1,000. Program for children that cannot safely live in their own homes or that of a relative due to physical abuse, sexual abuse or neglect. Alabama makes a board payment to foster parents for food and clothing but this does not cover extras such as band, sports, ballet, etc. This contribution would help with those costs.
Friends of the Arts for the Orange Beach Art Center, Julie Jordan, $1,000. This is a nonprofit 501 3c which provides financial & volunteer support for OBAC, its programs & activities. The center gives local artists a place to exhibit & provides art classes for adults. Its’ Children’s Program includes After School Arts, Summer Arts Camp, Kids Art Alley, Kinder Art & Teen Art which are affordable but also available to kids in need.
Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build, Rosemary Harris, $1,000. Part of the Habitat program dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Women’s Build is for women who want to make a difference by building simple, decent housing for low-income families.
The Lighthouse, Joanne Shiels, $1,000. Helps victims of domestic violence in Baldwin County, providing shelter to battered women and children. Includes crisis counseling, safe shelter and court advocacy.
Mary’s Shelter, Carolyn Brown, $1,000. Faith based maternity home in Elberta providing residential care for pregnant women who lack suitable housing or favorable family relationships. Care is there whether they choose adoption or parenting. Classes for living skills, parenting skills, job skills and edcation are available.
Share the Beach, Mike Reynolds, $1,000. This is a volunteer sea turtle conservation program of the Friends of Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. All donations support hatchlings’ successful birth and release into the Gulf.
Starfish Special Olympics, Sissy Flanigan, $500. This eight-member team competes in district and state meets and has a Special Olympics approved coach. They need help with entry fees, lodging expenses, towels, bags and suits.
To Be, Mary Lou Roskowski, $1,000. Help for pregnant women, counseling, parenting classes and free pregnancy testing. Located in Fairhope but serving all of Baldwin County as a support system for women facing crisis pregnancies.
Three Scholarships, Gulf Shores, Cameron Cribbs University of South Alabama, $1,000. Foley, Cyrus Cornez, Troy University, $1,000. Fauulkner State Community College, Kathryn Newton, $1,000
A total of $20,500 was awarded.
