The South Baldwin Literacy Council is calling on community members to volunteer as it works to address a pressing need in Baldwin County, where one in seven adults is considered functionally illiterate.
The nonprofit organization focuses on transforming lives and strengthening communities through high-quality, holistic education. Volunteers play a critical role in helping learners of all ages build the academic, professional and personal skills needed for long-term success.
“I started volunteering over a year ago and have loved it ever since. Everyone at SBLC is so amazing, welcoming, and so friendly. From the staff to the volunteers to the kids and adults, we are one big family, and it shows in everything we do. SBLC has so many different programs that it offers to our community. The summer reading program is so great for the kids. They are able to learn about many different countries, their cultures, history, food, and general life. It really takes these kids on a 6-week-long adventure. I love making a difference in each child's life and being able to see them progress through the year. For some of our kids, the help and encouragement that we all give them really makes a difference in how not only they see themselves, but how they believe in themselves as well,” said Summer K., a volunteer.
The council is currently recruiting volunteers for a wide range of programs serving both adults and youth across South Baldwin County. Adult education opportunities include GED preparation, Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language and a Career Advancement Program designed to support workforce readiness and upward mobility.
Youth-focused programs include afterschool tutoring at the organization’s Foley and Fairhope locations, homeschool tutoring and in-school tutoring partnerships. These services aim to support students who need additional academic assistance outside the traditional classroom setting.
“With 25 years of teaching experience, it's wonderful to be a part of an organization that values the many facets of literacy. Also, from the first interaction, the staff has been welcoming and supportive! Come join the SBLC family!!” said Annette H., a literacy educator.
Volunteers are also needed for Friends of SBLC, a group dedicated to supporting community events and fundraising efforts that sustain literacy programs throughout the area.
Beyond direct instruction, the council offers volunteer roles that support daily operations and outreach efforts. Tutoring positions allow volunteers to work one-on-one or in small groups with students. Maintenance volunteers help ensure facilities remain safe and welcoming learning environments. Administrative roles assist staff with essential office tasks that keep programs running smoothly.
“I had searched for years to find a place where I could truly make a difference in the lives of others. The South Baldwin Literacy Council is like no other non-profit I've ever served. I have truly gotten to see the impact I've made in students' lives. Working here, I am surrounded by people who truly want the world to be a better place. For that, I am grateful!” said Taylor J., a longtime volunteer.
Additional opportunities include community outreach to raise awareness about local literacy needs, fundraising to support student services and event support to help plan, execute and conclude special events throughout the year.
By volunteering, community members can make a direct impact on education outcomes and economic stability in Baldwin County. More information about volunteering and current opportunities is available at www.southbaldwinliteracycouncil.com.
