Sonya Price works hard every day to help her students become more independent.

“This is one of my main goals in educating young people,” Price says. “For me, this means they need to not only reach their academic potential, but also to learn how to effectively communicate with adults and to work productively with their peers. When they learn all three of these things, they are equipped to reach their personal life goals.”

Price is a special education teacher at Daphne Middle School. She has taught inclusion reading and math classes at DMS for three years now.

Before taking her talents to DMS, Price taught at Elberta Middle School and Magnolia School for a total of 14 years.

Price says her favorite part of teaching is learning which teaching method works best with each individual student in her classroom.

“Every student learns differently,” Price says. “My favorite aspect of teaching is when I can help a child become aware of his or her own personal learning style, so that they can become equipped with the individual strategies they need for success.”

Price says she knew from a young age teaching was the career for her.

“While in high school I worked as a peer helper and a tutor,” she says. “I have always liked helping students who learn differently.”

While she has spent the last 14 years impacting the lives of students one classroom at a time, Price says she hopes to one day speak to a larger audience of students.

“I recently earned my administrative degree,” she said. “I would like to take my proactive approach toward education to the next level and use my skills to influence more students in a school-wide capacity.”

Price says she is always encouraged by her students’ desire to learn all they can from her.

“Our youth have so many exciting new ideas they want to try and none of the intimidation we develop as adults,” Price says. “I find it constantly invigorating to work with so much energy and enthusiasm around me.”

SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOURSELF: I live on a small family farm. Over the years we have raised cows, row crops and hay for our horses. Presently, we raise and sell pecans and hay. I learned to drive a tractor shortly after marrying my farmer husband. On a family farm everyone pitches in. It's all about teamwork — both at school and on the farm.
