FOLEY, Ala. — Dorothy Chapman asked the mayor and city council for help on Tuesday with the snake problem she’s having at her home on South Chestnut Street.
“I’m very scared and need some help,” said the woman who described herself as a “disabled widow.”
Chapman, in comments made after Tuesday’s council meeting, said she has found a snake crawling through the window of her trailer; has found a snake in her storage room; in her son’s room; sees snakes in front of her house and behind it as well. A neighbor has come over and killed a couple of snakes for her, she said.
But Chapman has found out there is more than one kind of snake. She told council members she has tried to snake-proof her residence by covering pipes and holes and such but, “I got taken on a lot of the work.”
Councilwoman Vera Quaites said Chapman’s residence is in a “highly vegetative area,” and Chapman said her home is next to a big field.
Police Chief David Wilson told Chapman during the council meeting that he would send the Animal Control Officer out to her house to talk to her. Also, following the council meeting, Chapman spoke with a representative of the Community Development Department, who said the city will look at the grass situation and lot next door for possible code violations.
Chapman told the mayor and council she had nowhere else to turn for help.
In other council action, approval was given for the city to participate in the Aug. 7-9, 2009 Sales Tax Holiday.
A resolution was approved authorizing the mayor to execute a document for a $2 million draw on RBC Bank line of credit.
A resolution was approved accepting the sole bid submitted by Mobile Fixture of $211,112 for kitchen fixtures and equipment for the City Jail.
Two resolution were approved in connection with the Fire Department. One makes two temporary lieutenant (shift leader) positions permanent lieutenant positions, the other accepts the low bid of approximately $46,000 by Moyer Ford for two trucks.
A resolution was approved memorializing an extension of a one-year lease agreement between the Wallace Living Trust and the City of Foley involving property adjacent to Heritage Park used for overflow parking.
A resolution was approved regarding corrective action at the former Foley Police Department site on North Alston Street. Thompson Engineering is developing a plan as required by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for cleanup, the cost of the plan, due by May 27, 2009, to be approximately $13,000.
Approval was also granted by the council to apply for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant and a Target Grant under their Law Enforcement Grant Program in the amount of $1,200.
Approval was given for the installation of a street light on the north side of West Magnolia Avenue.
The council also approved the following proclamations: National Safe Boating Week May (16-22), Travel and Tourism Week (May 9-17), National Police Officers Week (May 10-16), National Corrections Officer Week May 3-9), and National Nursing Home Week (May 10-16).
