BAY MINETTE — Brothers Mike and Tommy Smith, a pair of 1960s standout athletes at Foley High School, carded an 8-under-par 100 score Saturday to win the Holly Hills Country Club’s annual Member-Guest Golf Tournament on the scenic nine-hole course located south of Bay Minette.
Mike and Tommy Smith, two of a foursome of brothers that also includes ex-Lion quarterback and longtime head football coach Lester Smith and their other brother Herb, defeated youngsters John Hartner and Skipper Sullivan for first place in the Championship Flight. Playing under a format of nine holes of best score, nine holes of scramble play and nine holes of alternate-shot, Mike and Tommy Smith carded 63-37 — 100.
The Hartner-Sullivan scorecard read 63-40 — 103.
The 27-hole event attracted a full field of 23 teams, HHCC board of directors Jack Robertson said.
“We got through just before the bad weather rolled in. The course is in super condition, which made for some low scores. We were really pleased with the number that turned out to play,” Robertson said.
Eddie Hartner, John’s uncle, teamed with another HHCC veteran, John Russell, to share third place in the championship flite with the team of Charles Duncan and John Garris at 104. Hartner and Russell went 64-39 for their third-place score while Duncan and Garris carded 66-38.
Robertson, the longtime men’s basketball coach and athletic director at Faulkner State Community College, and Bart Rison, one of his first recruits, finished fifth at 68-37 — 105.
Tucker Stuart and Brent Jones won the first flite by one stroke over a couple of Baldwin County’s high school girls basketball coaches, Scott Harville and Robert Wills. Stuart and Jones shot 70-36 — 107 to Harville’s and Wills’ 69-38 —107.
Jay White and Larry White finished third in the first flite at 70-38 — 108.
Anthony Hadley and Rick Ousley were Second Flite winners at 75-36 — 111. There was a tie for second place betwee the team of Robby Robertson, son of the FSCC coach who recently became the boys basketball coach at Foley High School, and Mike Vickery, and Tom Dorough and Bub Tomberlin.
Robbertson and Vickery carded a 73-40 and Dorough and Tomberlin 72-41.
