Lawrence C. “Larry” Smith, 68, a resident of Escanaba, Mich., died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009 at the VA Hospital in Iron Mountain.

He was born on Sept. 5, 1941 in Kalispell, Mont., the son of Carl and Dora Smith. He graduated from Whm. Christian High School in Independence, Mo.

Beginning in 1961, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard during Vietnam until his honorable discharge in 1965. He was awarded the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal.

He owned and operated Delta Sewing Center in Escanaba. He also did interior remodeling and was hired in 1987 as maintenance supervisor for Bishop Noa Home.

He enjoyed golf, baseball, softball, football, basketball, bowling, hunting, fishing and also found time for such things as art and sewing. Among his accomplishments were winning the Breezy Point Open Golf Tournament, reducing his 18 hole handicap down to a three one year, and playing pee-wee football with Kenny “the Snake” Stabler in Foley.

He was a member of the Escanaba Elks Lodge #354 and the Highland Golf Club.

Survivors include a son, Randy (Mary) Smith of Escanaba, Mich.; grandson, Kenny Smith of Escanaba; and sister, LaVonne Mottern of Indiana.

An anatomical donation to Michigan StateUniversity, Department of Anatomy has taken place. No funeral services or visitation have been planned.
