FAIRHOPE — Deputy Scott Ward was laid to rest with full military honors Tuesday morning.

As a light rain fell, members of police and fire departments from at least three states strained to get into the Fairhope Memory Gardens. The U.S. Coast Guard Honor Guard, led by AET2 Brain Ford, flew in from their base in Alexandria, Vir., to give the slain Baldwin County deputy a 21-gun salute.

Following the playing of “Taps” by a bugler and bagpiper John Spivey playing “Amazing Grace,” a quartet of Coast Guard helicopters did a flyover, in the Lost Man formation.

Ward was shot and killed Friday evening while responding to a call in the Marlow community. Sgt. Curtis Summerlin was shot twice during the same incident. The suspect, Michael Jansen, was shot and killed when the deputies returned fire.

Monday, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office announced that a pair of accounts have been set up to accept donations for the Ward and Summerlin families.

The public may show their support by making monetary donations at any PNC Bank location. For privacy reasons, the account numbers will not be listed. Instead, the public should request to make a deposit the Deputy Scott Ward Memorial Fund and/or Sgt. Curtis Summerlin Benefit Fund.
