Skateboarder dies after falling near pier

A 19-year-old man died in Mobile from injuries he received late Monday in a Fairhope skateboarding accident.

The teen, whose name was being withheld at press time Tuesday pending proper notification of his family, fell around 10 p.m. while riding his board on Fairhope Avenue near Mobile Bay, according to Cpl. Craig Sawyer, Fairhope police spokesman.

Sawyer said the man was with another 19-year-old when he decided to skateboard down the steep hill that descends to the bottom of the bluff at the Fairhope Municipal Pier parking lot. The teen was apparently turning at the bottom, Sawyer said, when he fell off his skateboard and struck his head on the paved road surface. He was not wearing a helmet at the time, and immediately lost consciousness, Sawyer said.

According to witnesses, an off-duty paramedic was nearby and immediately began first aid. Sawyer said Fairhope volunteer firefighters also provided emergency care.

The patient was taken by helicopter to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile. Sawyer said hospital staff informed the Fairhope Police Department that he died during the night.

The other skateboarder told police that the deceased was not a local resident, but lived out of state and was in Fairhope visiting relatives. Sawyer said it is unknown what caused him to fall, but there is no indication he collided with anything.
