MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO) will perform with popular Spanish classical guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas April 29, at 7:30 p.m., at the Saenger Theatre in downtown Mobile.
Robert J. Seebacher, music director of the Youth Orchestra, will conduct.
Benjamin Pearce, a sophomore at Foley High School, plays the French horn with the orchestra.
MSYO, a full symphony orchestra of top middle- and high-school musicians from across the Gulf Coast, will begin the concert with “March to the Scaffold” from Berlioz’s “Symphony Fantastique.”
Sáinz-Villegas will join the orchestra for Rodrigo’s “Concerto de Aranjuez,” one of the most loved pieces of Spanish music.
Sáinz-Villegas has established himself as one of the world’s leading classical guitarists. He has performed in more than 20 countries around the globe on such prestigious stages as New York’s Carnegie Hall, Milan’s Sala Verdi and Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Theater.
He has received more than 25 international awards.
“Playing with a guest soloist of this level will provide a memory for our students that will last a lifetime,” Seebacher says. “This concert is a challenge and a real proving ground for a young musician — when they can match their talents with a world-class soloist.”
The concert is the second in a series of concerts that match MSYO students with world-class soloists. Last year students performed with world-famous violinist Midori, and next year they end their season with Russian pianist Yuri Rozum.
“These guest soloists bring with them a body of experience amassed from playing with the best orchestras in the world,” Seebacher explains. “Providing students with this exposure is unique to our program.”
Individual tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.mobilesymphony.org, by phone at (251) 432-7080, or at the symphony box office, 257 Dauphin St.
The concert is at the Saenger Theatre, 6 South Joachim St.
Sáinz-Villegas will also appear with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. on May 1 and at 2: 30 p.m. on May 2.
