Silverhill to fill vacant Council seat

SILVERHILL, Ala. — The Silverhill Town Council is looking to appoint a new member, following the resignation of Rodney Criswell.

Criswell, who defeated longtime Council member John Ullrich in the last election, announced in September that he was stepping down from his Council seat. Under a newly adopted policy, Criswell stated he was no longer allowed to hold public office as an employee of the state of Alabama.

Criswell’s last official day with the town was Oct. 31.

Mayor Tim Wilson said four Silverhill residents have already expressed interest in the position, including a former council member.

Mike Allegri, who was appointed to fill a vacant council seat in 2005, lost to Bert Jones in the 2008 election. Alan Norden, who ran unsuccessfully for the town’s mayoral position in 2008, has also expressed interest in the position, along with Norman Young and former County Commissioner Wayne Gruenloh.

Young and Norden were present at Monday’s council meeting and both stated they welcomed the opportunity to serve the town.

Wilson asked Council members to consider appointing a new council member at its next meeting Nov. 15, or by the first meeting in December, which is set for Dec. 6.

In other business, the council voted to add a statement at the end of December’s water bill, urging Silverhill residents to recycle.

The action came at the request of Michael Zona, a student at Silverhill Elementary School who has been selected to represent the school at the annual Superintendent’s Red Ribbon Leadership Awards Dinner on Jan. 10.

In a letter to the council, Zona said he is required to participate in a community awareness project in keeping with the theme, “All Together Green.” The action was passed unanimously with all members of the council present.

The Council also voted at Monday’s meeting to adopt Resolution 432 to accept an offer of a patrol car from the Bay Minette Police Department. In exchange, the town will give a canine cage unit for the car.

At the request of Chief Kim Wasdin, the council also approved the expenser of up to $200 to remove and replace the striping of the car.

Wasdin also announced that the police department will once again be selling advertising for a calendar. She is also planning other fundraisers for the department, which will benefit the town’s reserve program.

“It is our goal to make the reserve program completely self-sufficient,” she said, “not only paying reserves salaries, but also providing insurance and equipment for the reserves through fundraising efforts.”

Wasdin also announced Monday that she interviewed three prospects Monday and planned to interview three more on Tuesday for the town’s new officer position.

The Council voted at its Oct. 4 meeting to accept a grant that would provide income for an officer position with the town for three years.

In other business Monday, the council:

— Voted to change insurance for town employees from Blue Cross-Blue Shield to United Healthcare.

— Voted to repave South Avenue at a cost of $4,000. Funds for the repaving are available from the town’s gas tax fund.

— Voted to allow Superintendent of Utilities Steve Williams to purchase Christmas lights and garland for the town’s Christmas ornaments at a cost of up to $1,800.

— Voted to allow Williams to offer vehicles and unused furniture as surplus.

— Renewed the town’s partnership with the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce at a cost of $350.

— Voted to spend up to $50 on a silent auction item for the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commer Annual Meeting in January.

— Voted to allow Town Clerk Patricia Bankester to use items for door prizes for the Clerk Meeting in November.
