Silverhill falls victim to 'knit bomb'

SILVERHILL, Alabama —A bombing was reported near the Silverhill Town Hall on Wednesday. No damage was reported. In fact, some might say it made an improvement.

Town Clerk Patricia Bankester said she was surprised when she received a call early Wednesday morning.

“(The caller) said, ‘Do you know you’ve been knit bombed?,’” she said. “I had no idea what she was talking about.”

Sure enough, when Bankester walked outside to the sign in front of Silverhill Town Hall, she found two “leggings” neatly knitted around the posts of the sign.

“I had no idea what it was until I Googled it,” Bankester said.

If you Google “knit bombing,” you will find that the practice has its own Wikipedia page. There you will learn that the practice, also known as yarn bombing, yarn storming, guerilla knitting or graffiti knitting, was discovered as early as 2004 in The Netherlands and in the United States as early as 2005 in Texas.

Examples of knit bombing have been found throughout the Mobile area, many of which have been claimed to the work of an anonymous group called Knitting Loon.

Bankester said she has no idea who is responsible for the “bombing” and that the pattern shows no cultural significance in a town known for its rich Czechoslovakian and Swedish heritage, among others. The town’s annual Heritage Day is held each year in September.

“We just want to know who did it so we can thank them,” she said.
