Silverhill Council approves new Library Board members

SILVERHILL, Alabama — The Silverhill Town Council approved the appointment of new board members and honored longtime board members for the Oscar Johnson Memorial Library at its meeting on Monday.

Following a 30-minute work session, the council convened for just 10 minutes on Monday with few items on the agenda.

Shirley Stephens, who represents the town council on the board and also serves as the library’s director, presented financials and meeting minutes for the library’s April board meeting, which were incorporated into the meeting minutes.

Stephens also announced that terms were up for the Board and that several board members had asked to step down.

“They are getting older and are just no longer able to keep up with the schedule,” she said.

The Council approved unanimously the nominations of Stephens, Barbara Sharp, Frankie Kucera, Judy Wynn and Steve Williams to the Board. They also approved the nomination of Dorothy Edhegard, Margaret Stephens, Marion Fosberg and Josephine Fosberg as honorary members to the board.

Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the Library is one of the oldest buildings in Silverhill, the site of the original Svea Land Company, and is named for the town’s founder, who ran the company.

The Non-Pariel Club took over the building and opened it as a library in 1922. The town took over the operation of the library from the Non-Pariel Club in 1975.

Council member Mike Allegri was not present at Monday’s meeting.

In other business Monday, the Council unanimously passed Resolution 492-05-20-2013 in support of Silverhill’s Senior Adult program and activities.

The group meets at 11 a.m. the second Thursday of every month at the Silverhill Community Center for a pot luck lunch and program.

As part of the resolution, the council voted to provide a monthly allowance of $100 to purchase food or items needed for the monthly event.

The council voted unanimously first to suspend the rules, then voted to adopt the resolution by roll-call vote.

The council also voted to approve minutes from the May 6 meeting and a special work meeting May 9 to discuss the town’s audit report for 2011-12, which was approved unanimously at Monday’s meeting. Financial expenditures for May 20 were also approved at Monday’s meeting.
