DAPHNE – Former Daphne standout pitcher Sarah Sigrest made the Atlantic Sun All-Conference Freshman team this year for the Jacksonville University Dolphins. Sophomore JU teammate and middle infielder Katie Kelly earned first team all-Atlantic Sun Conference honors.

Sigrest led the staff in wins (12), ERA (2.23), strikeouts (129) and innings of work (178.2) to earn the all-freshman accolades. Most of her pitching totals from this year rank in the top three of the single-season program records.

The Daphne native opened the year with nine strikeouts in a 1-0 shutout win over Texas A&M-CC on Feb. 6. Her strikeout total was the highest in a debut by any JU pitcher in program history.

Sigrest also earned A-Sun “Pitcher of the Week” honors on March 2 by recording a 2-0 record in four appearances with 15 strikeouts and allowing just three hits.

Sigrest is the fifth player to earn all-freshman honors in JU’s seven years of existence. Kelly is the fourth Dolphin in school history to earn first team all-conference recognition and the first since current graduate assistant coach Jillian Mirante earned the honor in 2007.

With the two selections, head coach Amanda Lehotak has groomed six of the 10 all-conference honorees in the program’s history.

“I am very proud of Katie and Sarah,” said Lehotak. “To earn this kind of recognition by their opponents is an honor. They could not have done this without their teammates pushing them to the next level.”
