GULF SHORES — If you search them on social media, or are already one of their 11,500 followers on Instagram, you've probably heard the phrase, "Hi, my name is Emily, and my husband and I are working to reopen our dirty soda shop here in Gulf Shores, Alabama."
It's how she starts most of her videos before giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at what she, 24, and Walker Cavaluzzi, 23, are doing to prepare for a new season at ShoreFizz.
They first opened last summer within Gulf Shores Family Pharmacy at 251 Clubhouse Drive. Cavaluzzi has known Stacy Davis, owner of the pharmacy, since she was a child. Davis is also a client of Cavaluzzi, who runs Coastal Connect Marketing, and offered to lease the couple the soda fountain already inside.
What was once an old fashioned soda fountain has been revamped. The decision to focus on dirty sodas was inspired by the reality TV show “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” which helped popularize the drink at the time the Cavaluzzis were opening up shop.
“The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives was taking off at the same time that we were opening up, and they made dirty soda popular up in the Utah area, and then it started to spread like wildfire through the rest of the U.S., but it hadn’t quite made it here, but people were very interested,” Cavaluzzi said.
To make the drinks, they take a variety of sodas, lemonades, energy drinks and sparkling water and add different flavors of sodas and creams that can also be completed with toppings such as gummies, edible glitter and marshmallow fluff.
Among some of the most popular drinks they serve is their Orange Dreamsicle, a popsicle in carbonated liquid form, and Fairy Dust, which contains Sprite mixed with strawberry and pineapple syrups and coconut cream topped with edible glitter. They also serve a drink called the Beach Bum, an homage to Cavaluzzi’s involvement with Beach Bum Outdoors, where she worked for two years in the company's early days.
Cavaluzzi, who specializes in social media marketing, regularly posts on ShoreFizz’s social media pages, which has contributed to their growth in the Gulf Shores community. She said the first video they posted in announcing their return has surpassed 140,000 views.
“We’re really focusing on improving in every single part of the business as far as our presentation and our customer service, and we’re gonna be here a lot more, and really everything is for the customer, and we’re really excited," she said.
She also said part of their menu will change every month. Since they are reopening near Valentine’s Day, she described their first theme as a “Let’s Get Back Together” series of drinks, with a spring break theme to follow.
“Definitely just consistent customer interaction,” Walker Cavaluzzi said on what’s rewarding to him about running ShoreFizz. “Seeing a lot of people enjoy something that we worked hard to create and then just being involved with that day in, day out, seeing our pages grow and stuff. It’s just a lot of fun.”
They plan to open for the season on Feb. 1. On opening day, they will be open from 3 to 6 p.m. Following that, they will be open Thursday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m.
