Shoe Station to open Fairhope location in March

FAIRHOPE — Shoe Station has announced the opening of its third location in Baldwin County with plans for a Fairhope location set to open in March.

The store, located at 350 Eastern Shore Shopping Center, is 20,000 square feet and is looking to hire 30 full-time and part-time employees with a target opening of March 11, said G. Brent Barkin, who served as president/CEO of Shoe Station and now serves as senior vice president of new business development and integration with Shoe Carnival.

Shoe Station was founded in Mobile in 1984 by Terry S. Barkin and includes 21 additional locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi, including locations in Spanish Fort and Foley in Baldwin County.

In December, officials announced the purchase of Shoe Station by Evansville, Indiana-based Shoe Carnival Inc. which, prior to the acquisition of Shoe Station, operated 377 stores in 35 states and Puerto Rico.

While Shoe Station is part of Shoe Carnival, Barkin said, its stores, including the new Fairhope location, will continue to operate independently under the Shoe Station banner.

"We have been serving the Mobile/Baldwin area since 1984 and we are just as committed to serving the people of the Fairhope area," Barkin said.

Shoe Station will be hiring hourly employees with a base salary of $9 per hour, higher for those with sales experience, Barkin said. Salaried wages will begin at $30,000 per year, up to a starting salary of $60,000 per year for some positions.

In addition to its regular line of top-quality name brands, Barkin said, buyers will be on the lookout for high-end products, particularly in the running shoe department.

"We're also committed to providing high-quality work boots and other products," he said.

In addition, Barkin said, Shoe Station will be partnering with local schools to provide community support projects.

"This new store is part of our ongoing commitment to providing quality products to our customers while continuing our commitment to serve the community," Barkin said.
