SFHS leads Baldwin teams in SE Relays, Fairhope’s Dortch wins girls shot put

 MOBILE—The ladies led the way for the Baldwin track-and-field contingent with the best team finishes Saturday in the Southeastern Relays at the University of South Alabama. The girls of Spanish Fort and Fairhope took top-10 spots in the prestigious 58-year-old high-school showcase.

The Lady Toros took seventh place and the Lady Pirates 10th against some of the best prep track and field athletes in Mobile and Baldwin Counties as well as Gulf Coast Mississippi and Northwest Florida. Bayside Academy and Daphne came in 13th and 14th in the 17-team field.

At the top of the heap was Pine Forest (Fla,) with a 92-84 point advantage over McGill-Toolen Catholic. UMS-Wright was third (78.5) and St. Paul’s Episcopal fourth (70) while Baker edged Murphy 53-49 to interrupt the Old Shell Road top-5 streak.

The SF boys also finished ahead of the other Baldwin teams that competed edging out Fairhope for 12th place 27-26. Daphne took 16th while Baldwin County and Bayside tied at 17th in a 19-team field.

McGill-Toolen’s Yellow Jackets won the boys side 93-87 over Pine Forest. Davidson edged UMS-Wright 61-58 and Mobile Christian rounded out the top-5 with a 46.

“Overall it was a good start,” said Spanish Fort head coach Michael Rauch. “We made some mistakes during handoff in the 4x100 and 4x200. Right now we are really trying to figure out where to put people in events to maximize points. Definitely a great start for the season.”

Individual Baldwin girls highlights included Kayla Dortch of Fairhope winning the girls shot put with a throw of 38-3. Olivia Swan of Spanish Fort took a second place in the high jump (5-2, SFHS school record) to all-state high-jumper Shelley Spires winning jump of 5-6. The next best jump was Gracie Hunt of UMS-Wright at 5-0.

SF’s Cheyenne Moody set a school record and was second in the triple jump (34-11) to Baker’s Brittany Cook (36-1/2) while Fairhope’s Ashley Joyner jumped 34-4 for third. Moody’s jump and teammate Savannah Lee’s (33-08, seventh) combined for a new school record to win the triple-jump relay and the pair also placed third in the long jump relay. Together they scored 18 of the team's 35 points.

The Lady Toros also set school records in the 4x800 (third place, 10:53) and in the  4x1600 (fifth, 25:09). Sophie Bengal, Sarah Carrico, Hannah Frain and Carissa Jones carried the baton in both relay events.

 Some of the Baldwin boys highlights included Ryan Shankle of Bayside edging Fairhope’s Caleb Casolaro in the 1,600 meter run for second place 4:45.69 - 4:48.95 behind the winning time of 4:31.29 by Wesley Curles of Trinity Presbyterian.

Answan Duncan of Fairhope took second in the 300m hurdles just 0.66 seconds behind Chris Taylor who won 42.08 – 42.74. Fairhope’s 4 x 400 relay team was third with Cullen Waters, Hayden Hatfield, Joshua Nash and Duncan on the stick for a 3:46.14 finish. Pine Forest won the event in 3:35.85.

 The 4 x 800 team for SFHS was third (9:08.20) on legs by Kevin Jones, Anthony Luna, Keaton Morris and Cooper Sewell. Trinity had the best time with an 8:48.56. The SF Toros also took third in the 4 x 1600. Noah Brown, Will Kent, Jack Morgan and Seth Quimby passed the baton four times over four miles in 20:43.49 just behind the Jackets foursome of David Williams, John Patrick Dalton, Dante Piccini and Andrew Dunne (20:15.70) and overall winner Trinity (19:46.38).

 Stephan Holcombe of SF was second in the long jump with a school record of 20-04.75 to Davidson’s Chance Rankins’ best of 21-01.50. Javon Brown tied his own SF record and was second in the triple jump for the Toros with a 43-11.75 while Mc-T’s Devon Dozier won with a 46-06.75. Hayden Hatfield of Fairhope and Spencer Woerner of Daphne tied for fourth in the pole vault at 12.0 feet. McGill-Toolen’s Sean Collins cleared 15.0 to win. Chris Phillips of Mobile Christian and Josh Johnson of Pine Forest tied for second at 12-06.
