Senator Katie Britt secures more than $2 million for Foley storm resiliency project

Posted

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, R-AL, has directly secured $2.063 million for the City of Foley through the Fiscal Year 2026 Homeland Security Appropriations Act to help strengthen the city’s infrastructure and improve storm resiliency during major tropical weather events.

The funding, secured by Britt in her role as chair of the Subcommittee on Homeland Security Appropriations, will support a project to relocate vulnerable overhead utilities underground in downtown Foley, a news release said.

The project will cover six blocks between West Magnolia Avenue and Myrtle Avenue, totaling about 2,300 linear feet. Funding will be used to cover construction and operating costs associated with the effort.

City officials said the project is designed to improve recovery efforts following tropical storms by protecting critical infrastructure, helping residents return to normal more quickly, preserving jobs and supporting economic recovery in the region.

Alabama's Gulf Coast regularly faces threats from tropical storms and hurricanes, and Foley, located along the northern Gulf Coast, is among the communities vulnerable to their impacts.

“Alabama communities along the Gulf of America know well the destruction tropical storms can bring. I’m proud to have secured over $2 million in federal funding to help the City of Foley strengthen its infrastructure before, during, and after major storms,” Britt said in the release. “This investment will result in a safer, more resilient community, and I’m eager to see the impact of this strategic investment across Foley and the broader region.”

Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the funding will help protect critical utility infrastructure that serves key areas of the city.

“I want to thank Senator Britt for understanding the needs of our community. This $2 million in funding represents a vital partnership between Congress, Foley and Riviera Utilities that directly addresses our city's resiliency. Putting these utilities underground protects the central corridor that powers our hospital and downtown businesses. It is a huge boost for our community, both for storm safety and the continued beautification of our historic downtown,” Hellmich said.

According to the news release, the Foley project is part of more than $14.97 million in Fiscal Year 2026 Homeland Security appropriations funding that she directly secured for Alabama.
