Sea Glass Initiative, a Baldwin County nonprofit that serves people experiencing homelessness, has launched a new fundraising effort as local organizations continue working to address housing instability across the county.
The nonprofit’s Light the Way campaign seeks to expand financial support for services provided to people living in cars, on the streets and in other unstable situations. The organization offers job placement assistance, case management, transportation, medical and mental health support, resume writing and job coaching.
Sea Glass Initiative officials said the campaign is rooted in the organization’s mission of helping people move from crisis situations to long-term stability. The nonprofit draws its name and inspiration from sea glass, describing its work as helping transform difficult circumstances into opportunities for recovery and growth.
The campaign comes as homelessness remains a significant issue in Baldwin County. According to figures provided by the organization, more than 800 documented individuals are experiencing homelessness in the county, including more than 200 children. Many have faced challenges such as job loss, medical crises and rising housing costs.
As part of the campaign, Sea Glass Initiative is encouraging supporters to become monthly donors, known as Lightkeepers, through recurring contributions of $19 per month. The organization said donations help fund meals, transportation, case management and employment-related services.
Since its founding, Sea Glass Initiative reports helping more than 60 households secure stable housing, serving more than 600 residents and providing more than 10,000 hot meals. The organization said those efforts have contributed to a reduction in the county’s unhoused population.
